EPDs vs LCAs: What's the Difference? - Circular Ecology

EN 15804 Modules Explained - Circular Ecology

EN 15804 Modules Explained - Circular Ecology

EPDs vs LCAs: What's the Difference? - Circular Ecology

EN 15804 Modules Explained - Circular Ecology

EPD-Smart-Paint.pdf

EPD-Smart-Paint.pdf

EN 15804 Modules Explained - Circular Ecology

Understanding the Scope of LCA in Exterior Painting

What Is Included, What Is Not Included, and How to Think About Leftover Paint and Disposal

In this series, we have compared CO₂ emissions by paint type using a 160㎡ residential project as a model.

In the second article, we mainly focused on A1–A3, which includes:

Raw material supplyRaw material transportManufacturing

In the third article, we added the idea of repainting cycles and explained why it is important to consider not only the difference in one painting project, but also how many years the coating will last.

However, there is one important point to clarify.

The comparisons we have shown so far are not a complete LCA of the entire exterior painting project.

In this article, we will organize the scope of the comparison and explain how to think about leftover paint and disposal.

EPD is a standardized and verified disclosure, while LCA is a more flexible form of analysis. For this reason, it is natural to describe this type of comparison as a simplified LCA comparison.

What Scope Does LCA Cover?

In building material LCA, the life cycle is generally divided into the following stages:

A1–A3: Product stageA4–A5: Transport to site and construction stageB1–B7: Use stageC1–C4: End-of-life stageD: Benefits from reuse, recovery, or recycling

This means that when comparing paints, we can theoretically consider not only raw materials and manufacturing, but also transportation to the job site, application, use, future repainting, and final disposal.

What Is Included in This Comparison?

The main focus of this series has been A1–A3.

In the EN 15804 framework, A1–A3 generally means:

A1: Raw material supplyA2: Raw material transportA3: Manufacturing

In other words, the numbers used in this comparison mainly show the CO₂ emissions generated up to the point where the paint itself is produced.

In the third article, we added repainting cycle assumptions as a reference.

However, repainting cycles are not standard EPD disclosure values. They are assumptions used for comparison in this series.

Therefore, this is not a strict EPD comparison. It is better understood as an LCA-style comparison.

This distinction is very important.

The following items are not included in this comparison:

Product delivery to the actual job siteWorker travelScaffoldingMasking and protective materialsRollers, brushes, buckets, and other toolsHigh-pressure washingWater and electricity used during applicationDisposal of empty cans and masking materialsOffice operationsSmall consumables used on site

These items mainly relate to A4–A5, or in some cases to the C stage or organizational emissions.

A4 refers to transport to the site.A5 refers to construction and waste generated during installation or application.C1–C4 refers to deconstruction, transport, waste processing, and final disposal.

Why Were These Items Not Included?

The reason is to keep the comparison axis clear.

If we included scaffolding, commuting, washing water, consumables, office electricity, and many small daily operational factors from the beginning, the comparison would become too complicated.

This series is designed to first show the difference between paint types and repainting cycles in an easy-to-understand way.

Therefore, it is more honest and clearer to keep A1–A3 as the main focus and organize other elements as supplementary information.

This also reflects the difference between EPD and LCA.

LCA can be used flexibly depending on the purpose of the analysis, while EPD follows standardized rules and disclosure formats.

Thinking About Leftover Paint

Even so, leftover paint is an important practical issue.

In this comparison, the condition was set as follows:

15kg of paint covers 36㎡.

For a 160㎡ residential project, the required amount of paint is:

66.67kg.

However, in actual ordering, paint is usually purchased by the can.

If five 15kg cans are ordered, the total amount becomes:

75kg.

This means that, in theory, there could be:

8.33kg of leftover paint.

This kind of thinking is one of the reasons why the Waste Paint ZERO Project was created.

Where Does Leftover Paint Disposal Fit in LCA?

In LCA thinking, the disposal of leftover paint is not usually part of A1–A3.

It is more naturally related to the C stage, especially:

C2: Transport of wasteC3: Waste processing for reuse, recovery, or recyclingC4: Final disposal

A 2025 paint EPD shows C2 as 0.0079 kg-CO₂e/kg, C3 as 0, and C4 as 0.023 kg-CO₂e/kg.

Together, these total approximately:

0.0309 kg-CO₂e/kg.

For a simple explanation, it is reasonable to use:

0.031 kg-CO₂e/kg

as a provisional estimate for the disposal impact of 1kg of leftover paint.

Three Ways to Think About 8.33kg of Leftover Paint

In the 160㎡ model, the theoretical leftover paint amount is 8.33kg.

The additional impact changes depending on how that leftover paint is handled.

1. If the leftover paint is reused

Disposal amount: 0kgAdditional impact: 0 kg-CO₂e

2. If half of the leftover paint is disposed of

Disposal amount: 4.17kg4.17 × 0.031 = approximately 0.13 kg-CO₂e

3. If all leftover paint is disposed of

Disposal amount: 8.33kg8.33 × 0.031 = approximately 0.26 kg-CO₂e

This means that leftover paint disposal is worth including as supplementary information.

However, compared with the main A1–A3 emissions, which are usually several tens to more than one hundred kg-CO₂e per project, the impact of leftover paint disposal is relatively small.

In this model, it is only about 0.1 to 0.3 kg-CO₂e.

The Most Important Message of This Article

The correct way to read this comparison is as follows:

The main focus is A1–A3.Repainting cycles are assumed conditions for comparison.Leftover paint and disposal can be added as supplementary factors.Scaffolding, masking, tools, worker travel, and other site-related factors are outside the scope of this comparison.

By clearly separating what is included and what is not included, the comparison becomes easier to understand and more honest for readers.

EPD and LCA have different purposes and formats.

LCA is an analysis method.EPD is a standardized and verified disclosure.

Therefore, this type of article should be understood as a structured comparison for explanation, not as a complete certified LCA for the entire painting project.

Summary

The comparisons used in this series are simplified LCA comparisons centered on A1–A3 in order to make the differences between paint types easier to understand.

They include:

Raw material supplyRaw material transportManufacturing

They do not include:

Product delivery to the job siteScaffoldingMaskingToolsWater and electricity used during applicationDisposal of empty cans and masking materialsOffice operations

These items relate mainly to A4–A5 or the C stage in LCA classifications.

For leftover paint, the 160㎡ model theoretically produces 8.33kg of surplus paint.

Using a provisional disposal impact of approximately 0.031 kg-CO₂e/kg, even if all of the leftover paint is disposed of, the additional impact is only about:

0.26 kg-CO₂e.

Therefore, leftover paint disposal should not be ignored, but in this comparison, the largest factors are still:

the A1–A3 emissions of the paint itselfandhow many years pass before repainting is needed.

This article is intended to explain how to understand LCA in exterior painting in a clear and practical way.

EPD is a standardized and verified disclosure.LCA is a more flexible form of analysis.

This series is structured as a simplified comparison closer to the LCA approach.
