Understanding the Environmental Impact of Paint

In the previous article, we compared A1–A3 CO₂ emissions for different types of paint, using one 160㎡ residential project as the model.

As a simple comparison based on the latest publicly available EPDs, the results were:

  • Water-based one-component inorganic coating: approximately 96.7 kg-CO₂e

  • Water-based two-component inorganic coating: approximately 174.0 kg-CO₂e

  • Two-component weak-solvent silicone coating: approximately 130.0 kg-CO₂e

However, what is truly important in LCA theory is not only how much CO₂ is emitted during one painting project.

Even more important is how many years the paint lasts and how many times repainting will be required in the future.

In LCA thinking, not only A1–A3, but also the use stage and the number of future renewals can affect the overall evaluation.

Why CO₂ Emissions from One Application Are Not Enough

Painting is not a product that ends with a single application.

Even on the same house, a paint that requires repainting after 10 years and a paint that lasts 18 or 23 years will have different repainting cycles when viewed over the long term.

In the world of LCA and EPD, A1–A3 refers to the product stage.

However, beyond that, there are also the construction stage, use stage, and end-of-life stage.

In a full building assessment, these stages are also relevant.

It Is Important to Think Over a Long Time Span

Let’s Review the Comparison Conditions Again

This time, we will use the same conditions as in the previous article.

  • Exterior wall area: 160㎡

  • Coverage condition: 36㎡ per 15kg can

  • Amount used per project: 66.67kg

The comparison target is the same as before: simple A1–A3 comparison values.

The emission factors used are based on publicly available EPDs:

  • Water-based one-component inorganic coating: 1.45 kg-CO₂e/kg

  • Water-based two-component high-performance coating reference value: 2.61 kg-CO₂e/kg

  • Solvent-based coating reference value: 1.95 kg-CO₂e/kg

In this article, the repainting cycles are assumed as follows:

  • Water-based one-component inorganic coating: 18 years

  • Water-based two-component inorganic coating: 23 years

  • Two-component weak-solvent silicone coating: 10 years

These years are assumptions set for comparison in this series.

The EPD itself does not guarantee the service life of the coating.

Therefore, these should be treated as assumed conditions for LCA comparison.

What Happens When CO₂ per Project Is Converted into an Annual Average?

The A1–A3 emissions per project in the previous article were as follows:

  • Water-based one-component inorganic coating: approximately 96.7 kg-CO₂e

  • Water-based two-component inorganic coating: approximately 174.0 kg-CO₂e

  • Two-component weak-solvent silicone coating: approximately 130.0 kg-CO₂e

When these values are divided by the repainting cycle and converted into an annual average, the results are as follows:

Paint Type

CO₂ per Application

Repainting Cycle

Annual Average CO₂

Water-based one-component inorganic coating

Approx. 96.7 kg-CO₂e

18 years

Approx. 5.37 kg-CO₂e/year

Water-based two-component inorganic coating

Approx. 174.0 kg-CO₂e

23 years

Approx. 7.57 kg-CO₂e/year

Two-component weak-solvent silicone coating

Approx. 130.0 kg-CO₂e

10 years

Approx. 13.00 kg-CO₂e/year

What we can see here is that, although the water-based two-component inorganic coating has higher CO₂ emissions per application than the two-component weak-solvent silicone coating, its annual average becomes lower.

In other words, when repainting frequency is included, the ranking changes.

This is a very important point in LCA thinking.

Consider Not Only Present Value, but Also the Value of Long-Term Durability

How Much CO₂ Can Be Reduced Compared with Two-Component Weak-Solvent Silicone?

Here, we will compare the results using the two-component weak-solvent silicone coating as the baseline.

The annual average CO₂ emissions are:

  • Water-based one-component inorganic coating: approximately 5.37 kg-CO₂e/year

  • Water-based two-component inorganic coating: approximately 7.57 kg-CO₂e/year

  • Two-component weak-solvent silicone coating: approximately 13.00 kg-CO₂e/year

Therefore, compared with the two-component weak-solvent silicone coating, the reduction effect is as follows:

Comparison Target

Annual Average CO₂

Reduction Amount

Reduction Rate

Water-based one-component inorganic coating

Approx. 5.37 kg-CO₂e/year

Approx. 7.63 kg-CO₂e/year

Approx. 58.7% reduction

Water-based two-component inorganic coating

Approx. 7.57 kg-CO₂e/year

Approx. 5.43 kg-CO₂e/year

Approx. 41.8% reduction

Two-component weak-solvent silicone coating

Approx. 13.00 kg-CO₂e/year

Baseline

Baseline

From this perspective, under the conditions used in this comparison, both inorganic coating systems are easier to position as having lower annual average CO₂ emissions than the 10-year cycle two-component weak-solvent silicone coating.

Looking Over a 50-Year Period Makes the Difference Even Clearer

In building LCA, 50 years is often used as a comparison period.

So, in this article, looking at the results over 50 years makes the difference easier to understand.

If we count how many times repainting occurs over 50 years:

  • Water-based one-component inorganic coating: 3 times

    0 years, 18 years, 36 years

  • Water-based two-component inorganic coating: 3 times

    0 years, 23 years, 46 years

  • Two-component weak-solvent silicone coating: 5 times

    0 years, 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, 40 years

Based on this assumption, the accumulated A1–A3 emissions over 50 years are:

Paint Type

CO₂ per Application

Number of Applications Over 50 Years

50-Year Total CO₂

Water-based one-component inorganic coating

Approx. 96.7 kg-CO₂e

3 times

Approx. 290.1 kg-CO₂e

Water-based two-component inorganic coating

Approx. 174.0 kg-CO₂e

3 times

Approx. 522.0 kg-CO₂e

Two-component weak-solvent silicone coating

Approx. 130.0 kg-CO₂e

5 times

Approx. 650.0 kg-CO₂e

In this comparison, the two-component weak-solvent silicone coating, which was in the middle range for one application, becomes the highest over the 50-year total.

This is because the more often repainting is required, the more the product-stage A1–A3 impact is accumulated again and again.

In LCA, Environmentally Friendly Painting Means Long-Lasting Painting Work

What This Article Is Trying to Communicate

What we can understand from this comparison is that the environmental impact of exterior wall painting cannot be judged only by the price of one can or the CO₂ emissions of one application.

When selecting paint, the important points to consider are:

  • How much CO₂ is emitted during one painting project

  • How many years the paint lasts

  • How many times repainting will be required as a result

From the perspective of LCA theory, long-lasting performance itself becomes an important factor in reducing CO₂ emissions.

Summary

In this article, we combined simple comparison values based on the latest publicly available EPDs with assumed repainting cycles.

As a result, the annual average CO₂ emissions were:

  • Water-based one-component inorganic coating: approximately 5.37 kg-CO₂e/year

  • Water-based two-component inorganic coating: approximately 7.57 kg-CO₂e/year

  • Two-component weak-solvent silicone coating: approximately 13.00 kg-CO₂e/year

This shows that, in exterior wall painting LCA comparisons, it is very important to consider not only the difference per application, but also how often repainting will be required.

In the next article, we will organize how to understand LCA comparisons more clearly, including surplus paint, waste disposal, and items that were not included in this comparison.

In LCA, beyond the A1–A3 stages covered in this article, there are also the construction stages A4–A5 and the end-of-life stages C1–C4.

Notes

The values in this article are simple comparison values based on unified conditions of 160㎡ and 36㎡ coverage per 15kg, and publicly available EPDs that could be confirmed as of 2025–2026.

They are not certified values for individual products.

The scope of this comparison is mainly A1–A3.

It is not a full LCA that includes A4–A5, B, and C1–C4.

The repainting cycles of 10 years, 18 years, and 23 years are assumed conditions for this comparison series.

The EPD itself does not guarantee these service lives.
